Gratitude For The Hesed Of God

Feb 24, 2026

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His hesed endures forever. Give thanks to the God of heaven, For His hesed is everlasting. Psalm 136 (See definition of hesed here)

Psalm 136, often called “The Great Hallel”(Note 1) is one of the most recognizable psalms in the Psalter. It is a liturgy of praise to the Lord as Creator and Redeemer and the lens through which all of God’s works – creation, redemption, providence, and kingship – are understood.

The 1599 Geneva Bible summarizes the psalm this way: “every blessing we receive flows from God’s ḥesed, that steadfast and undeserved love by which all creation endures. Let us, therefore, through fervent exhortation, give thanks to God, the Creator and Sustainer of all things.” (Note 2)

Here is gratitude not as sentiment, but as the realization that existence itself is a gift of God’s unearned love. A divine faithfulness so complete that even the stars exist as notes in the endless refrain, for His ḥesed endures forever.

Note 1: A prayer of gratitude and thanksgiving. Derivative of hallelujah.
Note 2: The core phrase of Psalm 136 (God’s hesed endures forever) is repeated in each of the 26 verses. It is a full-bodied exhortation to express gratitude for God’s enduring hesed. Different Bible translations use various words in place of hesed. Here are a few common versions:
His faithful love endures forever. NLT
For His faithfulness is everlasting. NASB 2020
For His steadfast love endures forever. ESV
For His mercy endures forever. NKJV
For His loving-kindness continues forever. TLB
His love never quits. MSG
