Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you. Matthew 6:33 ESV

American poet and philosopher, Henry David Thoreau (1817 – 1862) once observed, “If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life he has imagined, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours.” The observation has a ring of truth. Bold vision and perseverance often bear fruit.

Yet on its own, this can drift into self-directed ambition. The Bible elevates and grounds such longing: our greatest “dream” is not self-actualization, but alignment with God’s eternal purposes. A life well-lived before Him holds the big vision of His Kingdom while receiving each day’s ordinary gifts: work, relationships, provision, and simple joys, with grateful, obedient joy.

The author of Ecclesiastes wrestled with life’s vanities and big questions, yet concluded there is “nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also… is from the hand of God” (Ecclesiastes 2:24).

God does not pit grand vision against daily faithfulness. He calls us to fix our eyes on things above (Colossians 3:1–2), think on what is true, honorable, and excellent (Philippians 4:8), and advance confidently. Not in our own dreams, but in the life Christ has imagined for us through the Gospel. At the same time, we are not to despise the day of small things (Zechariah 4:10). The widow’s mites, the boy’s loaves and fish, and quiet acts of obedience show that God delights to multiply faithfulness in the ordinary.

This balance guards against two pitfalls: restless striving that forgets the Giver, or small-minded complacency that ignores the King. When we pursue God’s righteousness first, unexpected success arrives in “common hours.” Not as worldly acclaim, but as the peace of alignment with His will, the joy of His presence, and the fruit of Spirit-empowered living. True success is becoming like Christ: unwavering in eternal purpose while compassionate in the present moment.

Application

• Big Kingdom Thoughts: Set aside time today to pray over God’s calling on your life. What “dream” might He be refining in you; deeper discipleship, faithful witness, recovery of truth in your sphere? Write it down and align it with Scripture.
• Small Pleasures in His Hand: Pause to receive today’s gifts with thanks; a meal, a conversation, a moment of rest, or progress in your routine. Ask the Holy Spirit to turn these into worship.
• The Bridge: Where are you out of balance? Bring it to the Lord in repentance (1 John 1:9) and ask for grace to advance confidently in His direction.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You that in Christ we are called to a more than ordinary existence. Align our hearts with Your Kingdom purposes. Grant us courage to advance confidently in the life You have imagined for us, rooted in Your Word and empowered by Your Spirit. Teach us to savor the daily gifts from Your hand without despising small things or losing sight of the eternal. May our lives display the beauty of grace-enabled obedience, for Your glory and the good of those around us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
