The Center Of It All

Jun 29, 2025

God raised Christ from death and set Him on a throne in deep heaven, in charge of running the universe. Everything from galaxies to governments, no name and no power exempt from His rule. And not just for the time being, but forever. He is in charge of it all, has the final word on everything. At the center of all this is the church. The church is Christ’s body, in which He speaks and acts, and by which He fills everything with His presence. The church, you see, is not peripheral to the world. The world is peripheral to the church. Jesus at the center of it all. Adapted, Ephesians 1:23

On this Sabbath, let’s get some perspective. We tend to view the Church as just one piece of the tapestry of our lives. It is not so. The Church is the Body of Christ, the locus of all things. The other pieces of our life (work, play, etc.) are peripheral.

Likewise, the Sabbath is the center of our week. The main day. Rabbi Abraham Heschel put it this way: “The Sabbath is not for the sake of the weekdays, the weekdays are for the sake of Sabbath. It is not an interlude but the climax of living.”

Here, then, is God’s view of things: The Sabbath was the last and crowning act in God’s creation. The Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy for our benefit. It is a time set aside for us to worship God, and to align our lives for living the other, lesser, days of the week.

Govern yourself accordingly.
