But as for me, Lord, my prayer to you is for a time of favor. In your abundant hesed, God, answer me with your sure salvation. Psalm 69:13 CSB
There is love, and then there is hesed love. There is no direct translation of this Hebrew word into Greek or English. Hesed originates from a word that means to bow one’s head toward another and signifies a covenant relationship. It is often translated lovingkindness, but the nature, fullness, and magnitude of hesed love can not be translated into English.
Hesed love is an unconditional extravagant love, the compulsion to give and to love without limit those who have no merit. Hesed is an expression of compassion, mercy, faithfulness, and love impelled by a free-willed decision and not by obligation.
Hesed is a defining characteristic of God linked to His compassion and graciousness. It is expressed in His willingness to forgive wrongdoing and to take upon Himself the sin, rebellion, and transgressions of His people.
