Oh, what a wonderful God we have! How great are his wisdom and knowledge and riches! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his methods! For who among us can know the mind of the Lord? Who knows enough to be his counselor and guide? Romans 11:33-34 TLB

Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways, and how small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand?” Job 26:14 ESV

Knowing God is possible. Comprehending God is impossible.

It is possible to know God because God has made Himself known. But we can never know everything there is to know about even one aspect of God’s character or work. Why? We are finite. God is infinite. Secondly, the effects of sin cause us to distort, confuse, and pervert the Truth. And, finally, in His sovereign wisdom, God has chosen not to reveal some things.

The appropriate response to God is a humble realization that we will always have more to learn. And a heart of wonder and awe in light of his incomprehensible majesty. We should never grow apathetic in seeking to know God. Those who want to know God will be instinctively led to devoted study of God’s Word so as to understand Him as He has revealed Himself, and to avoid any false view of God that will dishonor Him.
