The Shamrock

Mar 17, 2023

Legend has it that when St. Patrick was teaching the Gospel in 5th century Ireland he used the three-leaf clover (“shamrock”) to illustrate the Holy Trinity. The shamrock was a common Celtic plant. In St. Patrick’s telling, each of the leaves symbolized a member of the triune Godhead. Father, Son and Holy Spirit were represented as equal parts of the single stem.

Whether or not St. Patrick actually used the shamrock analogy is debated. And it has certain theological weaknesses. What is not uncertain is that St. Patrick was a true evangelizer of The Word and worthy of being honored for his influence and contribution in spreading Christianity in Ireland. For more on St. Patrick revisit our 2022 post.

And then there is this.
Q: Why should you never iron a four-leaf clover?
A: You don’t want to press your luck!
