In Hoc Anno Domini. In the year of our Lord. Some 2,000 years ago a Light came into the world, and the world has never been the same. Except for one thing. Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. Indifferent to wisdom, we repeat the same mistakes over and over again.
2,000 years ago the world was enslaved in the Roman empire. Having learned little, if anything, we are on the brink of allowing it again. Of yielding our birthright for pottage. Of government as god.
In 1949, Vermont Royster (1914 – 1996), a Pulitzer Prize winning writer and journalist, wrote an editorial describing this cycle. The editorial has been published in the Wall Street Journal annually ever since. It’s more relevant today than it was in Hoc Anno Domini. Read it here.
