Independence Day, 2024

Jul 4, 2024

Happy July 4th.

This is the 248th birthday of the founding of the United States of America. On that sunny July day in 1776, John Adams, lawyer and statesman (1735 – 1826), was one of the fifty-six delegates gathered in Philadelphia who voted to approve the Declaration of Independence. Adams served in various other roles in the nascent nation, including as its second President.

Twenty years earlier, in February of 1756, Adams made the following entry in his personal journal:

Suppose a nation in some distant region should take the Bible for their only law book, and every member should regulate his conduct by the precepts there exhibited. Every member would be obliged in conscience, to temperance, frugality, and industry; to justice, kindness, and charity towards his fellow men; and to piety, love, and reverence toward Almighty God… What a Utopia, what a Paradise would this region be.

Imagine.
