“Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. And I say to you, an hour is coming, and even now has arrived, when the spiritually dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live……. Do not be amazed at this; for a time is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come out; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who who practiced evil to a resurrection of judgment.” John 5:24-25, 28-29 Adapted
“Truly, truly” (or verily, verily) is a solemn declaration used by Jesus to emphasize the absolute certainty, divine authority, and pivotal importance of what He is about to say. Some translations have Jesus repeating “truly, truly” in verse 25 instead of “and I say to you.”
Jesus declares that those who exercise faith in Christ will go on to the resurrection of life. Their good deeds are the fruit of having heard and believed the Word of the Son. Their works demonstrate a heart that has passed from death to life. By contrast, those who refuse to believe remain spiritually dead. Though they may perform many outwardly good acts, these deeds, done apart from faith in Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit, are inherently insufficient to secure the resurrection of life. This is the Word of the Lord.
