Emerging from the Protestant Reformation (1517 – 1648), the Five Solas (Latin; alone(s)) represent the foundational theological principles of the Protestant Reformation and the doctrinal pillars of the Protestant faith. They affirm that salvation is entirely God’s work, received through faith in Christ alone, according to Scripture alone, and for God’s glory alone.
The Five Solas:
- Scripture Alone (Sola Scriptura): God has spoken to man, and the Bible is His Word, given to us to make us wise unto salvation. His Word is inspired, inerrant, and the final authority for all matters of faith and practice, above church tradition, human reason, and personal experience.
- Christ Alone (Solus Christus): Jesus Christ is the only mediator between God and humanity. His perfect life, atoning death, and victorious resurrection are the sole basis of our salvation. No cleric, sacrament, or other mediator can add to or replace His finished work.
- Grace Alone (Sola Gratia): Salvation is a free and unmerited gift of God’s sovereign grace. Even the faith by which we believe is itself a gift of grace (Ephesians 2:8–9). Nothing in us earns, prepares us for, or contributes to the initial work of salvation.
- Faith Alone (Sola Fide): Sinners are justified (declared righteous before a holy God) by faith in Jesus Christ alone, apart from any works or merit of their own. Faith is the sole instrument by which we receive the free gift of salvation. It contributes nothing to the basis of our acceptance with God, which rests entirely on the imputed righteousness of Christ.
- Glory to God Alone (Soli Deo Gloria): Because salvation is God’s work from beginning to end, all glory belongs to Him alone.
The Five Solas are often misunderstood as five independent doctrines. They are more accurately understood as answers to five questions, to wit:
- By what authority do we know the Gospel? Scripture alone.
- Who accomplished our salvation? Christ alone.
- Why does God save sinners? Grace alone.
- How do we receive salvation? Faith alone.
- Who receives the glory? God alone.
Application: The Five Solas are not historical slogans, but a living call to the Church today. They call us to reject every rival authority, every confidence in ourselves, and every ground for human boasting, and to rest wholly in God’s revealed Word, in Christ’s finished work, and in sovereign grace. In an age of confusion and self-justification, this Gospel calls us to repent quickly, obey joyfully, and proclaim without shame the only hope for sinners: salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
