And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. John 17:3 NASB 2020
It is the 11th hour in the Passion of Christ. Jesus and the Disciples have just celebrated the last legitimate Passover feast to ever be celebrated. They have left the Upper Room and are on their way to the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus has been consoling and encouraging the Disciples.
And then this. The High Priestly Prayer. Jesus prays to His Father to preserve and protect the Disciples. And He makes this radical statement: “this is eternal life, that they may know You and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” Eternal life comes through knowing God.
So how do we come to know God? The answer is as simple as Christ’s revelation. We come to know God primarily through the Revealed Truth of His Word. Our souls are famished without the Word of God. We come to know God through the daily study of His Word and by sitting under the teaching of faithful expositors of Scripture.
Crave and savor the pure spiritual milk that is the Word of God. “Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s kindness.” 1 Peter 2:2-3 NLT
