“A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out. In faithfulness He will bring forth justice.” Isaiah 42:3 NIV; Matthew 12:20
Here is the Shepherd’s mercy, drawn in two brushstrokes: He meets the weak where they are. A reed already bent, a flame barely burning. He does not compound their brokenness. He does not discard what is nearly broken; He tends it.
And notice why. Not out of softness, but in faithfulness. His gentleness is not weakness; it is the expression of His covenant faithfulness. The smoldering wick is not beyond His care. The flame may be faint, but He will not extinguish it.
